Problem Solutions
Beginner Problem - White To Play
r5k1/p1b2r2/1p6/8/8/2BP1pNq/PP3P1P/R3Q1RK b - - 0 1
1...Qxh2+
2.Kxh2 Rh7#
Intermediate Problem - White To Play
r1b2r1k/2q2pNp/p2b4/2ppnQB1/8/2P2pP1/1P3P1P/4R1K1 w - - 0 1
1.Qf6!
That's the key move to all winning lines, and they all look pretty similar, and they all result in a mate in 4:
1...Ng4 2.Nf5+ Nxf6 3.Bxf6+ Kg8 4.Nh6#
1...Be7 2.Nf5+ Bxf6 3.Bxf6+ Kg8 4.Nh6#
1...Qd8 2.Nf5+ Qxf6 3.Bxf6+ Kg8 4.Nh6#
Advanced Problem - White To Play
2k5/K2p4/8/2P5/2pp2pP/4P2p/5P1P/8 w - - 0 1
The lines get long and complicated, but White wins because Black will always get caught in a skewer:
1. h5 dxe3
If Black tries to run the d-pawn 1...d3 then 2.h6 d2 3.h7 d1=Q 4.h8=Q+ Kc7 5.Qb8+ Kc6 6.Qb6+ Kd5 7.Qd6+ Ke4 8. Qxd1
Pretty much the same thing happens if Black tries the c-pawn: 1...c3 2.h6 c2 3.h7 c1=Q 4.h8=Q+ Kc7
5.Qb8+ Kc6 6.Qb7+ Kxc5 7.Qc7+ Kd5 8.Qxc1
2.fxe3 g3
3.h6 g2
4.h7 g1=Q
If Black tries to not allow White to queen with check by 4...Kc7 then 5.h8=Q Kc6 6.Qf6+ Kxc5 7.Qb6+ Kd5 8.Qd4+ Ke6 9.Qxc4+ and White will eventually snarf up any Black pawn that tries to queen.
5.h8=Q+ Kc7
6.Qb8+ Kc6
7.Qb7+ Kxc5
8.Qb6+ Kd5
9.e4+ and wins.
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
