Run Away! An Ex-Harvard MD Says We Are All Going To Die! Or At Least Get Reinfected By Wuhan Flu
Oh! Harvard! I've heard of that school. Aren't they the ones who conspire to keep Asians out? And used to be explicitly anti-Semitic?
But the cachet of "Harvard" is so strong that we should probably just do what we are told by all Harvard grads.
Harvard doctor warns 'troubling' cases indicate coronavirus herd immunity is 'wishful thinking'
But take a look at the highlighted terms.
Ackerly, a primary care physician who was a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, said he recently had a patient test positive for coronavirus several months after previously recovering from COVID-19. His 50-year-old patient not only caught COVID-19 a second time, but the doctor said that the latest infection was much worse than the initial illness.
The guy is a primary care physician. Not a virologist. Not an expert in immunology or infectious diseases. He probably spends his days lancing boils and doing throat cultures for strep and trying to cop feels off the occasional hot chick. And he is no longer on the faculty. I wonder why? There are lots of benign reasons, but maybe he was stupid and even the Harvard clinical faculty couldn't tolerate his idiocy?
But the larger question of whether prior disease confers immunity is no clearer after reading this article. There is no mention of the accuracy of the testing! For all we know, there is a significant percentage of false positives, especially in the earlier tests, so those first illnesses might have been the flu or a bad cold or syphilis for all we know.
This guy wants his 15 minutes, so he is spouting nonsense on the off chance that someone will listen. But no matter what he says, one possible case of reinfection plus some anecdotal evidence does not a trend make.
This is a perfect example of why rigorous studies must be done, so that we don't rely on just the impressions of the physicians treating this disease.
