Saturday Afternoon Chess Thread 10-12-2019
IM Jovanka Houska (GBR)
In addition to her OTB achievements (WGM and IM titles), Ms. Houska has written a number of specialized opening theory books, including Play the Caro-Kann: A Complete Chess Opening Repertoire Against 1E4, Starting Out: The Scandinavian, Grandmaster Secrets: The Caro-Kann and Opening Repertoire: The Caro-Kann. I guess she really likes the Caro-Kann.
MovieGique will be along later with the movie thread. As always, the chess/dress pr0n thread is an open thread, so there is no such thing as an off-topic comment.

Solutions Update
Beginner Problem - White To Play
r1b2nk1/7p/p1n1R1pP/3p2N1/Pp4N1/1Pr3P1/2P2P2/5BK1 w - - 0 1
It's all done with knights:
1.Nf6+ Kh8
2.Nf7#
Intermediate Problem - White To Play
8/7p/6p1/8/k2K2P1/8/8/8 w - - 0 1
1.g5!
White needs to play this move immediately, otherwise, the win slips away. Because Black was threatening to get a passed pawn with 1...h5, which would have tied up White enough to get a draw, But now Black can't move the pawns at all, so White just scoops 'em up:
1...Kb4
2.Ke5 Kc4
3.Kf6 Kd5
4.Kg7 Ke5
Or 4...h5 5.gxh6 g5 6.h7 Ke4 7.h8=Q Kf5 8.Qh3+ and White will be able to win the pawn without much difficulty.
5.Kxh7 Kf5
6.Kh6 and wins
Advanced Problem - Black To Play
2r2rk1/pp5p/6p1/3p4/3Ppn1q/1P2Q2P/P4PP1/R2RNK2 b - - 0 1
1...Rc3!
The key move, to deflect the queen from defending f2. Capturing the rook leads directly to mate: 2.Qxc3 Nxh3 3.Nd3 exd3 4.Rd2 Rxf2+ 5.Ke1 Qe4+ 6.Kd1 Rf1#
2.Qd2 isn't that much better:
2...Rxh3
3.gxh3 Qxh3+
4.Kg1 Rf5
5.f3 Qg3+
6.Kf1 Rh5
7.Qg2 Nxg2
8.Nxg2 Qxf3+
9.Kg1 e3
10.Rf1 Qh3
11.Nf4 Rg5+
12.Ng2 Rxg2#
Probably best is
2.Nd3
To disrupt the rook's attack. Play might proceed
2... Nxd3
3.Rd2 Nxf2
4.Qxf2 Rxf2+
5.Rxf2 e3
6.Re2 Qxd4
7.a3 Qf4+
8.Kg1 d4
9.Rf1 Qe4
10.Rf3 Rc1+
11.Kh2 Qe5+
12.Rg3 Qb5
13.Rgxe3 dxe3
14.Rxe3 Qg5
15.Re4 Rc2 and wins
Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.
