Tonight's ONT Is All About Safety

We here at the ONT think that everyone should be aware of basic gun safety.

Gun Safety, Part 2

I'm a big fan of overkill.

Safety From Dangerous Ideas

When Faith Comes Up, Students Avert Their Eyes

Surprisingly, an article by an academic bemoaning that college students don't feel safe or comfortable when religion is discussed in class, nor in discussing the role of religion as it pertains to their values. He seems to get it, vaguely;

Although few of our students today know much about John Wesley’s charismatic preaching or the core tenets of Methodism, many of them are still perfectly comfortable with the idea of finding one’s own good while also doing work in the world that promotes what they now call social justice. If they no longer have a principled spirituality, they need to think hard about what else sustains efforts aimed at justice—and about how politics, ethics, and the nature of knowledge have been intertwined with religious faith and practice.

It's hard to tell from the article because its focus is student's behavior, but I wonder if he understands that “principled spirituality” is just a fluffy new-age attempt to reap the benefits of theism without all of the yucky faith and belief in God. I wonder if he realizes that we arrived at this point in modern, prosperous because politics, ethics, and the nature of knowledge have been intertwined with religious faith and practice. I wonder if he realizes that “ sustains efforts aimed at justice” are antithetical to those principles as the word “justice” is most commonly used today on college campuses. It sounds like he might be willing to have that discussion anyway, which would be a good thing.

Truck Safety

Safety In The Arms Of Children

Three schoolboys found suicidal man about to jump off bridge - they grabbed him and didn't let go

Good for those kids. They are heroes, and I mean that in every sense of the word. So are the two adults who jumped in to help, especially the woman who has “a rare disability that makes her highly prone to blood clotting”. It sounds like that by jumping in to help the man she actually might have put her own at risk. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Fire Safety

Safe At Home

Michael Lorenzen accomplishes feat that only Babe Ruth accomplished in Cincinnati Reds win

It's not something big, like hitting for the home run cycle (never been done in the bigs, just two times in the minors), but it is still kinda neat. Michael Lorenzen joined Babe Ruth as the only players in MLB history to hit a home run, play center field and earn the win as a pitcher in the same game.

Safety From Dangerous Ideas, Part 2

Facebook Blocks Bridget Phetasy's Podcast with Glenn Beck: 'Against Community Standards'

The subject of the podcast seems to be fairly innocuous:

"I have firebrand Glenn Beck on the podcast this week and we delve into the value of struggle and overcoming hardship," Bridget wrote in her introduction to the episode. "The cultural celebration of 'victimhood,' how tribalism and the culture wars trick people into thinking that the problem is outside themselves, and the dangers of buying into your own fame."

She went on: "They explore the importance of being able to say 'I don't know,' the loss of compassion that occurs when we stop seeing the humanity of the people we disagree with, Glenn's surprising conversion to Mormonism, and what he found in the depths of his most recent dark night of the soul."

But, you know, Glenn Beck (BOO! HISS!) and Bridget Phetasy(Former Playboy writer who has done the unimaginable and started to think for herself. The incels call her a THOT, but she's not, not really. I met her at RINOfest '19 (otherwise known as Gay Patriot's birthday party) and she was nice enough and certainly intelligent. I think she's more libertarian than conservative, but I also think she's becoming more conservative in spite of herself), so we-must-ban-the-wrongthink! Fuck Facebook.

Sorry about the multiple Twitter linked Mp4s tonight, but they've been piling up in my ONT folder, and I'm trying to empty it out. Tonight's ONT brought to you by high school English teachers:
