The Most Overrated A-List Actors Of All Time (Or Our Time)?
Obviously it is a deeply personal list, but I can't help putting Meryl Streep right at the top, or damned close to it.
The conventional wisdom is that she is superbly flexible with an incredible range. But everything I recall is the same tired whine and odd mannerisms and awful accents. And I'm being polite and ignoring her breathtaking stupidity and arrogance. Alar anyone?
- Meryl Streep
- Al Pacino (post 1980)
- Annette Bening
- Mark Ruffalo
- Ben Stiller
I have seen Bening on film and on stage, and damn! She stinks on stage more than on the big screen. Ruffalo too....he was wooden and almost monotonal on stage, and was clearly the weak link
Pacino is obvious. He is a characature of himself, and has been for 30 years.
Stiller is nails-on-a-chalkboard unpleasant for me. Has he done anything that isn't sophomoric and formulaic?
Oh...we can quibble about the "A-List" part. So in the interest of world peace, we can say A, A-, B+ actors.
PS. Honorable mentions include Gwyneth Paltrow, Leonardo DiCaprio (great in "Blood Diamond"), Nicolas Cage (is he a D-List now?), Marlon Brando, Harrison Ford.
