Ilhan Omar Filed Taxes Jointly With a Man Who Was Not Her Husband, While Legally Married to Another Man

A report released by the Minnesota Campaign Finance and Public Disclosure Board shows that Rep. Ilhan Omar broke federal tax law by filing her taxes jointly with a man to whom she was not legally married.

The Thursday report found that Omar filed joint tax returns in 2014 and 2015 with Ahmed Hirsi, her current husband, whom she did not legally marry until 2018.

The Minnesota Democrat had originally married Hirsi in a religious ceremony in 2002, but the couple separated in 2008. Omar then legally married another man, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, in 2009. The two divorced according to their faith tradition in 2011, but Omar did not legally end the divorce until 2017.

Omar got back together with Hirsi, her first husband, in 2012 but they were not legally married and eligible to file taxes together until 2018.

The finding by the Minnesota Campaign Board means Omar tax returns were in violation of federal law.

U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar was 19 years old in 2002 when she first applied for a Hennepin County marriage license with Ahmed Hirsi, a fellow Somali immigrant and "the love of my life."

Though the couple would have three children together, split, and later reconcile, they never legally married until January of 2018. By then Omar represented a state House seat from Minneapolis and was on her way to a historic and ultimately successful run for Congress.

Long-standing questions about her complicated marriage and immigration history have dogged her ever since, never more so than on Thursday when a state campaign finance board revealed that Omar and Hirsi filed joint tax returns in 2014 and 2015 -- a period when she was legally married to another man.

Since she was first elected to public office in November 2016, Ilhan Omar has rarely avoided the opportunity to talk for public consumption. We happened upon an exception to the rule back in 2016 in the course of Omar’s campaign for the Minnesota legislature when we learned of Omar's then current marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. At the time she held out Ahmed Hirsi as her husband on her campaign site and elsewhere. We found that Omar had legally married Elmi in 2009 and wondered if he was her brother. Omar remained married to him from 2009 to 2017. Although Omar has three children with Hirsi, Omar never did marry him until last year.

When I asked Omar about all this by email in August 2016, she declined to respond in substance and implied that the question reflected bigotry on my part. "There are people who do not want an East African, Muslim woman elected to office and who will follow Donald Trump’s playbook to prevent it," her campaign told me through a criminal lawyer. "Ilhan Omar’s campaign sees your superfluous contentions as one more in a series of attempts to discredit her candidacy."

As the story blew up in the local media, Omar treated it as a public relations crisis. She brought in Democratic operative Ben Goldfarb to do the talking on her behalf. The campaign issued a statement that went back to the royal flush of bigotry accusations, decrying the "Trump-style misogyny, racism, anti-immigration rhetoric and Islamophobic division" allegedly motivating questions about her marital status. Omar herself refused then and since to answer questions about her marital history or even who Elmi is if not her brother.

When Omar refuses to talk, it’s unlike her. Her silence reflects an insoluble problem. This week she's not talking. She's not talking about the unlawful joint tax returns she filed with Hirsi...while married to Elmi.

Omar and Hirsi never split. Omar's marriage to Elmi was a sham. The illegal Omar/Hirsi joint tax returns reopen a story that Omar has to keep closed. This seems to me highly likely to have something to do with the cat that has reappeared to hold Omar's tongue again this week.

As the Department of Homeland Security makes clear, it is a serious crime -- not a victimless, harmless infraction -- that "weakens our nation's security and makes us less safe."

Anyone capable of and willing to lie to federal officials in face-to-face interviews, falsify government forms under penalty of perjury, and conspire to undermine the integrity of our immigration system is a threat to our country.

Social media posts, photographic evidence and publicly available biographical data strongly suggest that Elmi (now living in London) and Omar are siblings with the same father. Many of the pair's Instagram and Facebook comments to each other have been deleted.
