Unexpectedly, a Lesbian Vegan Restaurant Which Charged a "Man Tax" of 18% to Compensate for the Pay Gap That Doesn't Exist Is Shutting Down

A vegan restaurant in Australia that charged men 18 percent more than women is closing its doors.

Handsome Her, located just outside of Melbourne, will be shuttering its windows at the end of April, the Daily Wire reported Tuesday.

Handsome Her? Oh, I totally didn't expect them to dabble in gender nonconformity. This day fetches me so many surprises.

The owners do not suggest that the closure is a result of their prejudicial policy towards men that was applied for one week of every month. There was also no explanation as to why males had to pay exactly 18 percent more for food, although according to the Sydney Morning Herald, the proprietors explained their policy when the restaurant first opened in 2017: "House Rules, Rule #1: women have priority seating. Rule #2: men will be charged an 18% premium to reflect the gender pay gap (2016) which is donated to a women’s service. Rule #3 respect goes both ways."

Handsome Her, a cafe advertised as a safe space for women and lesbians, made headlines in 2017 when owner Alexandra O'Brien announced a controversial business plan.

"When we opened Handsome Her in 2018, we expected that perhaps we might make a stir through our brazen and public discussions of structural inequality," the café announced on Facebook.

"The man tax blew up the internet, an idea we didn't think was too radical and yet the way the world responded showed us how fragile masculinity is and solidified the necessity for us to confront and dismantle patriarchy," the post continued.

"While it is a shame to lose the physical space (and we understand how essential it is for women and lesbians to hold space), we leave knowing that the communities we have made transcend the trendy vegan café on Sydney Rd, Brunswick."
