Hawaiian Judge Overruled on Trump's Transgender Ban in the Military
Well, the original judge wasn't technically Hawaiian. But she was/is a Hawaiian judge in spirit.
An appeals court has reversed xer.
Halfway through Obama's last year in office, the military also began the process to end the ban on transgenders serving in the military. Trump, however, vowed to "get away from political correctness” in the military, deferring such decisions to "the generals, the admirals, the people on top." Trump announced a full ban on transgenders in the military in June 2017, before Obama’s policy would take effect. But Trump's ban was blocked by a federal judge in October 2017.
The appeals court lift the ban on transgenders serving as transgenders, noting that transgenders are allowed to serve (under Mattis' formulation of Trump's directive) in the capacity of their actual biological sex. In other words, Bradley Manning could not serve as Chelsea Manning, but he could serve as Bradley Manning, even if he identifies as transgender.
I'm not actually sure what the hell that means in the real world. I think it means that you're still allowed to dress up like Klinger so long as you still use the men's bathrooms, barracks, and showers.
The ban isn't actually fully lifted, though, as other Hawaiian judges (not all of which are actually from Hawaii) still have their own injunctions on the policy. Trump is seeking an expedited Supreme Court review to clear up this newest spate of Judicial #Resistance.
Love Whoever You Want
Even if it's super-weird.
