White House, Open Borders Democrats Remain Firm In Their Positions; No End to Shutdown Soon
No deal.
Chances look slim for ending the partial government shutdown any time soon.
...
Trump vowed to hold the line on his budget demand, telling reporters during his visit to Iraq on Wednesday that he’ll do "whatever it takes" to get money for border security. He declined to say how much he would accept in a deal to end the shutdown.
"You have to have a wall, you have to have protection," he said.
Back from the 29-hour trip to visit U.S. troops, Trump said in a Thursday tweet "we desperately need" a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, funding for which has been a flashpoint between the White House and Congress ever since Trump took office.
He called on Democrats in Congress to fund his wall, saying the shutdown affects their supporters. He said: "Do the Dems realize that most of the people not getting paid are Democrats?"
Steve Scalise says there will be no votes in the House this week.
There's a big danger here for Trump. Many economists think we're heading towards a (hopefully short and shallow) recession, partly due to the Fed's constant raising of interest rates.
Now, I don't think that a shutdown will cause the recession-- people were predicting this a few months ago, after all.
But of course the Democrats and media (and NeverTrump Wormtongues) will claim it was Trump's racist wall that caused the slowdown (should it actually happen).
I imagine that was why the White House initially caved on the issue.
