The Morning Rant: J.V. Edition
So the law-abiding people who turn in their guns are the ones responsible for gun crime? And the more guns they turn in, the less gun crime there will be? So why has gun crime gone up? I don't understand! I think I'll fling some poo...maybe that will help me think.
Firearms amnesty as UK gun crime rises 27% this year
The amnesty comes less than a month after national figures revealed the number of crimes involving firearms in England and Wales increased by 27% to 6,696 in the year ending June 2017.
Many firearms are "held in innocence and ignorance of their illegality" and are often left forgotten in people's homes, according to the National Ballistic Intelligence Service (Nabis), which is co-ordinating the surrender.
Others are acquired through criminal networks and handing them in could save lives, the service added.
I have been working diligently to remove the phrase, "You can't possibly be this fvcking stupid!" from my political discussions, but there is no way on earth anything could prevent me from blurting that out if I were to be so unlucky as to chat with anyone involved in that statement.
Do they not see the logical flaw in their point? If a firearm is held "in innocence," or is simply forgotten, it beggars belief that it is also the weapon used in one of the crimes that make up a 27% increase!

Hot News from the Antarctic Underground
A new NASA study adds evidence that a geothermal heat source called a mantle plume lies deep below Antarctica's Marie Byrd Land, explaining some of the melting that creates lakes and rivers under the ice sheet. Although the heat source isn't a new or increasing threat to the West Antarctic ice sheet, it may help explain why the ice sheet collapsed rapidly in an earlier era of rapid climate change, and why it is so unstable today.

President Trump’s 2017 Report Card (first draft)
Reasonably fair, although I would certainly quibble with a few grades...

Re-civilize the Streets:"Crime is down, but Mayor de Blasio deserves little credit."
I very much doubt that crime is down in NYC; they simply aren't taking seriously many of the obvious low-level stuff that happens every day. I'm in the city a lot, and it just feels less safe. I'll bet the New Yorkers who read this blog will agree.
