Love Of Venus And Mars
Carlo Saraceni
Carlo Saraceni (1579 16 June 1620) was an Italian early-Baroque painter, whose reputation as a "first-class painter of the second rank" was improved with the publication of a modern monograph in 1968.
It's Wikipedia, so it might be completely off base, but you really can't beat "first-class painter of the second rank" as damning with faint praise.
At first glance it is a fine work, but my preconceived notions made me look more carefully and find some pretty obvious flaws. I wonder whether if it had been labeled a Caravaggio or a Rubens I would have been so critical?
