The Cutting Season: First Ever Arrest in American Case of Female Genital Mutilation

I read a previous article that stated this is "The Cutting Season," when female genital mutilation is most often performed.

A Detroit emergency room physician has been charged with two counts of female genital mutilation, illegal under US law, in what is thought to be the first arrest in US history under this law.

From Detroit News:

Hotel records helped show two families, each with a young girl, stayed at the hotel on Feb. 3. Surveillance video from the unnamed hotel show two adult women and two girls checking into the hotel.

Seven days later, an FBI child forensic interviewer talked to one of the girls, who said she was brought to Detroit with a second girl for a "special girls' trip," according to the FBI.

The girl told the FBI that Nagarwala "pinched" her on the "place (where) she goes pee," the government alleges.

"(The girl) said that she was told not to talk about the procedure," FBI Special Agent Kevin Swanson wrote in the complaint.

A subsequent medical examination showed that the girl's genitals did not appear normal and a section had been altered or removed, according to the court filing....

The second girl said she underwent a procedure and identified Nagarwala as the doctor she visited in Detroit, according to the complaint.

"She said that she 'got a shot,' and that it hurt really badly and she screamed," the FBI agent wrote. "Her parents told her that the procedure is a secret and that she is not supposed to talk about it.

"(The girl) said that after the procedure, she could barely walk, and that she felt pain all the way down to her ankle," the agent continued.

A subsequent medical exam showed the girl's genitalia had a small incision and a small tear.

The parents apparently brought the children from Minnesota to have this barbaric procedure inflicted on them.

Will they be charged with conspiracy?

By the way: Great news. Caitlyn Jenner had her own genitals surgically removed and that's cause for widespread celebration.

A man trying to impose what he calls "the civil part of the sharia law" in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis has sparked anger among local residents and Muslim leaders.

Abdullah Rashid, 22, a Georgia native who moved to Cedar-Riverside last year, has been making the rounds in the Somali-dominated neighborhood, telling people not to drink, use drugs or interact with the opposite sex. If he sees Muslim women he believes are dressed inappropriately, he approaches them and suggests they should wear a jilbab, a long, flowing garment. And he says he's recruiting others to join the effort.

But local Muslim leaders are sounding the alarm. They are working to stop Rashid's group, General Presidency of the Religious Affairs and Welfare of the Ummah, and have notified Minneapolis police, who say he's being banned from a Cedar-Riverside property. Some say the group is preying on vulnerable young Muslims in a community that has dealt with national scrutiny around radicalization and terrorism.
