Alabama Governor May Resign Announces Resignation Rather Than Face Republican-Backed Impeachment for Sex Scandal
Update: Governor Booked Into Jail
Update: Former Governor Bentley has now resigned. Further, he was booked into jail on campaign finance violation allegations. See update at post's end.
The impeachment would be over, they say, his misuse of governmental power to cover up the affair he had with a staffer, rather than the affair.
The Republicans aren't playing defense for Republican Governor Robert Bentley. (BTW, that sounds like one of those names of people in movies or books where you go, "Wow, that name is so anonymous, like it was cooked up by a computer algorithm, that it sounds totally faked.)
So now he's floating the idea that he might resign as early as today.
The Lieutenant Governor who'd take over if he did resign is also a Republican, Kay Ivey. If she becomes governor, she'd be Alabama's second female governor.
Bentley had previously filed a motion asking a judge to block the impeachment proceedings, claiming the proceedings were unfair and did not afford him time to fashion an appropriate response and defense, and a judge bought that and issued an emergency stay of proceedings. However, the Alabama Supreme Court has reversed that ruling and permitted proceedings to resume.
Noted pervert Bill Clinton was unavailable for comment.
By the way: Where are we on this, collectively, would you say? Assume the hypothetical that there was no wrongdoing except that against his wife (that is, the affair). Absent any abuse of office or misuse of power, is this still impeachable, do you think? Beyond that -- do we even really care that much?
