Jeff Sessions Warns Sanctuary Cities That Their Federal Funds Could Be Cut
But this might be more bark than bite -- the feds' ability to force state law enforcement to enforce federal laws is limited.
This might be one of those times we regret federalism.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired a broadside at so-called "sanctuary cities" Monday, telling reporters local policies of noncooperation with immigration authorities are "dangerous" and will cost communities federal funding.
In the Trump administration's most pointed warning yet, Sessions said federal law allows withholding of federal funding to sanctuary cities, and signaled that such measures will soon be taken. Sessions, who took the podium at White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer's regular media briefing, warned of a pending crackdown by the administration.
"Such policies cannot continue," he said. "They make our nation less safe by putting dangerous criminals back on the street."
The sanctuary cities are threatening to wage a fight in court, so determined are they to keep their criminals. (Note that this does relate only to criminals - state law enforcement officials would not have non-criminal illegals in their custody.)
Meanwhile, the father of the illegal immigrant who allegedly raped the 14 year old girl in Maryland (which is doubling down on becoming the first sanctuary state) has been arrested by ICE. He's also, of course, illegal. I guess that makes his rapist son a "DREAMER."
He dreamed of raping little girls, I guess.
Oh, and the media continues pumping out stories attempting to portray those being deported as nice people caught up in a rotten system. The guy the New York Daily News tries to present in a favorable light is an illegal who was arrested by ICE at a court appearance for misdemeanor assault, who has a "long rap sheet" in addition.
Didn't Obama promise to "prioritize" deporting criminal illegals? I don't remember progressives crying then -- I guess that's the difference between executing some enforcement and insincerely promising some enforcement while actually making America a Sanctuary Country.
