Christ Carrying the Cross
El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos)
His view of Toledo is, in my layman's opinion, one of the greatest artworks created by man. But this one isn't bad either.
One of the commenters in a recent thread mentioned the religiosity of some of the art I have been posting. Obviously the Roman Catholic Church has been a patron of the arts, especially during the renaissance. They had the money and the reach and the motivation, so it is unsurprising that the work that survives has, in many cases, a religious theme. Luckily the equivalent of "modern art" was stuff from Caravaggio and other cutting edge artists.
They were lucky they didn't have to look at this kind of crap, or this kind or this kind.... and so are we!
