John Kerry visits Hiroshima [krakatoa]
Tears were shed. Platitudes were mouthed. Equivalencies were asserted. Historical context was ignored.
As many as 220k died as a result of the bombings on Aug 6 & 9, 1945, but the long delayed final casualty was the certain truth that many millions more were saved. Not only with the end of war in the Pacific theater the bombings prompted, but also as a stark example of the power of such a weapon, and that example's subsequent effect as a deterrent to its use through the many decades of the Cold War.
As a wise man once said, "You might as well appeal against the thunder-storm as against these terrible hardships of war."
There is room to both mourn the loss of life in Hiroshima & Nagasaki, and at the same time remain accepting of the somber calculus that the greater good was accomplished with those bombings.
That room only exists if one isn't in the intellectual and ahistorical wasteland of post-modern moral relativism.
