Are Cruz and Rubio "Really Hispanic"? Is Obama "Really Black?"

The lefties on the Larry Whitmore show, which other lefties don't watch because they're racist and Afraid of Brown People (TM), debate whether Cruz and Rubio are authentically "Hispanic."

Meanwhile, Ben Carson opines that while Obama may be biologically half-black, he was "raised white," and obviously did not have the same black experience as Ben Carson. Carson grew up in a ghetto and had to raise himself out of it. Obama was a well-traveled cosmopolitique.

I should note that Carson is being demanded to "defend" his remarks -- and that Larry Whitmore and his panelists are not.

This despite the fact that Ben Carson did not do as Whitmore's panel did and deny that Obama was "really" black. He pointed out that Obama did not have a very typical black upbringing -- which is completely true -- but did not deny his identity as a black man.

Only the racialists at Whitmore's little-watched show did that.

What a shock, huh?

As to the actual charges being leveled here, I think it's all fair play. Obama simply isn't black in the way that a lot of American blacks are blacks. Oh, partly, I'm sure, but not entirely.

And Whitmore's crew claims that Cruz and Rubio aren't "Hispanic" because they don't embrace or advertise their ethnic identities or whatever. I think that's stupid and false -- Rubio talks about it literally every single speech -- but I suppose we must allow opinions to vary without calling out the attack dogs.

Gee, funny that the attack dogs have been sicced on Ben Carson, though, huh? I wonder why.

A couple of weeks back, I criticized a NYT writer for claiming that neither Cruz nor Rubio were "real Hispanics" because they did not sufficiently gesticulate to the priorities of the leftist identity politics wing of the Democratic Party. I found that very noxious: The claim, squarely stated, that you can't be of a race if you don't embrace the politics most people of that race do.

If I were to apply this rule to other whites, I'd be calling them "race traitors" if they didn't vote GOP -- obviously racist, but somehow it's not racist to call Cruz and Rubio race-traitors for failing to kiss La Raza's ring.

And once again that's kind of false as regards Rubio-- he has embraced that sort of politics, and he has kissed La Raza's ring.

But he's a Republican. A drop of Republican blood and you're white, I guess. A bit of an inversion and modification of the hardcore racists' old rule.

But I don't find Whitmore's false claims offensive, beyond their being false. If his premise were true -- and it might be somewhat more true as regards Cruz -- I could see someone being said to not be wholly "Hispanic" if they didn't have the prototypical -- which is to say stereotypical -- Hispanic traits and background and identity-signaling.

I would also say the same about Obama. Of course, again, Carson's comments were completely true, and did not deny Obama's racial identity.

But do note that, while Whitmore's comments may not be "offensive" and worth demanding a "defense" of (we reserve that for Republicans), we are talking about evaluating people according to how closely they fit the biggest stereotypes about races and ethnicities.

So if any black man deviates from the most well-known tropes of blackness, he's not really black?

If a black guy was raised comfortably in the middle class, is he now not really black?

When Mark Halperin quizzed Ted Cruz on his favorite foods, I guess he was expecting the answer "Chimichangas wrapped in a burrito smothered in mole sauce."

Ted Cruz had to prove he had eaten Cuban food.

Seriously, dude? Even I've eaten Cuban food.

Not "offensive," but maybe something people claiming to be post-racial shouldn't do, huh?

Of course, the people allegedly against racism have become some of the most doctrinaire, out-and-proud racialists the world has ever known. They're kind of open about this- - they're not even hiding it.

They're pretty frank about their belief that your race should inform, if not wholly determine, pretty much every aspect of your mode of thought, expression, behavior, and desire.

Go outside their racialist lines just a little bit and they begin chattering that you're really a race-traitor, and, even worse, you're the worst thing a person could possibly be: Actually White, and therefore fit for racial mockery.

Celebrate diversity -- so long as that diversity conforms to the most restrictive possible stereotypes about how different groups are "supposed" to think and act.

Aren't our racially-enlightened progressive friends a swell bunch?
