Sunday Night Open Thread-[Weirddave]
Here's a great story about the America I wish I still lived in:
Not Yours To Give: Davy Crockett on The Role Of Government.
It's interesting to judge the reactions of people when they read the above story. So many people have been conditioned from birth to believe that government HAS to take care of, if not them, then at least some people; "The poor" or "The sick" or whoever. Suggesting that it isn't the role of government to do any such things gets stares of disbelief and accusations of heartlessness.
I don't believe that it is the role of government to do any of the things it does in the name of the welfare state.
That does not mean that I don't think that some people need to be taken care of, I just think that private charity is a much better way to accomplish that goal. Implied in that is that I, as a successful member of society, have an obligation to donate time and money to make that happen, and I am prepared to don that mantle of responsibility, because I truly believe that such a society would be a much better place for EVERYONE.
So how is that heartless again?
