Six Baltimore Cops Indicted In Freddie Gray Death
The DA lowered the boom on these guys.
The cop driving the van is facing a 2nd degree murder charge, which is...wow. That's going to be a heavy lift. He's also facing a vehicular manslaughter charged related to his driving of the van. The medical examiner found that Gray was killed by slamming his head into a bolt in the van. The theory being they handcuffed him, didn't strap him in as required and the way he was driving led to Gray's death.
Three other cops were charged with involuntary manslaughter. This seems related to the their seeing Gray was injured and unresponsive yet did not get him medical assistance.
The big bombshell from this is the DA saying the arrest itself was unfounded. The knife Gray was carrying wasn't a switchblade and was legal for him to have. That's a really big deal, again if true.
Amusingly the head of the Baltimore PD union is calling for a special prosecutor. Cops generally get a friendly deal from their colleagues in the DA's office and don't want outsiders coming in. Now that the shoe is on the foot however, local DAs can't be trusted.
Long way to go and a lot of other information will come out. Now that charges have been filed, it's time to let the process work its way out.
