Evasion Report, 17 December, 1944
1st Lt. Robert N. Hamburger US Army Air Force 9th Fighter Squadron/49th Fighter Group served in the Pacific flying P-38s from March of 1944 to July 1945.
On Nov 3 1944 the 9th FS was returning from a bombing and strafing mission on enemy shipping in Ormoc Bay off the island of Leyte in the Philippines when they encountered an enemy convoy and attacked. Lt. Hamburger was shot down by ground fire and picked up by friendly Filipino guerillas. For five weeks he evaded the enemy as he was nursed to health. He eventually rejoined his unit.
You can read the report he filed here.
After the war Lt. Hamburger finished his degree then attended and graduated from medical school at Yale.
Dr. Hamburger passed this month on Oct. 6. He lives on in the legacy of his children and grandchildren.
May he rest in honored glory.
