John Boehner: You Know, If Obama Plays His Cards Right We Could Do Immigration Reform Next Year

Huh.

Well, I’ve outlined to the President in July that the House, the Congress, ought to be dealing with immigration reform. It wasn’t likely to happen this year because of the flood on the border, and the President’s own pounding his chest about using his phone and his pen. But I did outline that you know, there’s a possibility that Congress could take this issue up next year. But if that were going to happen, there are things that he should do, and things he should not do as we lead up to this. And I think adhering to the law is a minimum requirement from the President. And he ought to be takin actions to better secure our borders. And so I would hope that the President would continue to follow the law, and begin to take steps that would better secure our border. It would create an environment where you could do immigration reform in a responsible way next year.

Now Team GOP will say, "he didn't say "comprehensive immigration reform" and that doesn't mean amnesty anyway if he did". Now that's nice and all but we all know that any immigration reform that Obama will sign will include amnesty. And the House GOP "principles for immigration reform" include amnesty (or as Ace described them, "Principles For Why You Should Vote Third Party"). And lest we forget, Obama said he said the GOP immigration "principles" were A-OK with him.

That Boehner quote was from yesterday's Hugh Hewitt show which was guest hosted by a Republican congressman. So you kind of have to think the fix was in and that's a question Boehner wanted to be asked.

Not mentioned in that interview...ObamaCare.

Here's the question I'd ask Boehner and McConnell....The House GOP likes to brag about how many times it's voted to repeal ObamaCare. Assuming the GOP takes control of the Senate, will you both commit to bringing up a full repeal bill in the first month of the next Congress?

They don't need to hold hearings or spend a lot of time writing a bill, the House passed such a bill, H.R. 45, last year. Just reintroduce it in January and slap a new number on it. Easy peasy guys!

It's interesting that the GOP is holding out the "carrot" of immigration reform but is pretty quiet on repealing ObamaCare these days. Pretty telling.
