Overnight Open Thread (6 Jun 2014)
D-Day at 70. Remembering the most brilliantly conducted invasion in military history. Weather forecasting was a key component in the success of the D-Day landings. Interesting to note the need for full moon illumination, something quite the opposite for today.
From Utah Beach to Kabul: How Army gear has changed since D-Day.
Weather Stuff
This is satirical, but after the naming of winter storms BS, I could see this happening. The Weather Channel to start applying monster names to hurricanes and tropical storms. Perhaps they should name them after Democrats. They are far more scarier than fictional monsters. Interesting to note that there was a study that determined hurricanes named after females are deadlier than ones named after males. So far, Hillary (with two L's) hasn't been used. Yet.
Men are at a higher risk of being struck by lightning. Mainly due to fishing evidently. #waronmen.
Not sure you need a study to figure this one out. Men's attraction to women's bodies changes seasonally.
In this study, researchers tested whether men’s ratings of women’s attractiveness varied from season to season. They found that men rated the same images as more attractive in the winter compared with the summer. The authors hypothesize that the difference is due to the so-called “contrast effect” – basically, men are used to seeing women’s bodies more in the summer, and therefore have higher criteria for attractiveness.
Sword Fight
It's not everyday you get a full on sword fight in the news. Sword-wielding Sikhs clash at India's Golden Temple. Here's the proper response if found in this situation.
Badass Quotes
The 13 most badass lines ever uttered by American military members. I like this one.
“They’ve got us surrounded again, the poor bastards.”
- Creighton W. Abrams, the Battle of the Bulge
Bad British Commentary
The NHL gets the treatment this time.
Economic Truths
Ten essential economic truths liberals need to learn. Here's 5 of them.
1) Government cannot create wealth, jobs, or income. Because government has to take money from somebody before it can spend it, there is no economic gain from anything the government does.
2) Income inequality does not affect the economy.
3) Low wages are not corporate exploitation. In a free country, people voluntarily accept employment, so all workers believe their current job to be the best choice from among their opportunity set.
4) Environmental over-regulation is a regressive tax that falls hardest on the poor.
5) Education is not a public good.

This bike balances itself. What's the fun in that?
The Bergdahl Bounce
Just great. Thanks Mr. President. The Bergdahl bounce.
Today we received an e-mail from our “Threat Integration/Criminal Intelligence Branch” (e-mail subject line: “Kidnapping for Prisoner Exchange”) which states that the risk to U.S. Soldiers of kidnapping in the wake of SGT Bergdhal’s prisoner exchange has increased. The message is issued as a result of “new operational hazards that pose a threat to [] personnel” with the following internal subject line:
Subject: Terrorist groups call for kidnapping of westerners and in particular U.S. Military members, combined with the recent release of U.S. Army Sgt Bergdhal increase the threat of kidnappings of military personnel.
Bad Teachers
Notorious teacher scandals. Sex Ed has really changed since I was in school.
