Gun Thread (5-25-2014)
UCSB
Love this L.A. Times headline: 7 dead in drive-by shootings near UC Santa Barbara
Of course one of the 7 was the assailant himself, and 3 of the 7 were stabbed, not shot. But other than that, it's a faithful representation of what happened.
Twitchy has a nice rundown on 3 myths about this incident plus one more that are already running rampant.
Here someone who was not disqualified under current gun laws lawfully purchased firearms and used them to commit a crime despite living in a state that makes the left fawn over its "tough gun laws" (e.g., http://www.msnbc.com/all/california-did-tough-gun-control-laws-cut). And like that second Twitchy link points out, he was already being seen by a psychiatrist who failed to diagnose the danger he posed.
Like always, the left would love to tell you that passing one more perfect law would solve this, but they can't because of that damned NRA. Out in the real world, it's hard to see how anything they openly claim to want would've made a difference here. Of course, what they really want is a complete gun ban but they don't have the balls to say it.

Under The Radar
Here's the latest example of the Obama Administration's under the radar approach to gun control: Operation Choke Point
The general outline is the DOJ and bank regulators are putting the screws to banks and other third-party payment processors to refuse banking services to companies and industries that are deemed to pose a “reputation risk” to the bank. Most controversially, the list of dubious industries is populated by enterprises that are entirely, or at least generally, legal. Tom Blumer’s extremely informative post summarizing what is known to date about Operation Choke Point reproduces the list, which includes things such as ammunition sales, escort services, get-quick-rich schemes, on-line gambling, “racist materials” and payday loans. Quite obviously, some of these things are not like the other; moreover, just because there are some bad apples within a legal industry doesn’t justify effectively destroying a legal industry through secret executive fiat.
