Overnight Open Thread (1 Feb 2014)

Ah yes, tomorrow is Groundhog Day. You know, Punxsutawney Phil is more accurate with his predictions than so-called climate scientists and their global warming models.

Speaking of Groundhog Day, here's an interesting question. How long was Bill Murray stuck in Groundhog Day?

Obvious Study

People slow to react are more likely to die prematurely. You don't say. Someone actually paid for this? But hey, you can test your reaction time here with this test.

The Cook's Thesaurus

Ever start to cook something and realize you are missing an ingredient or two? Well fear no more as The Cook's Thesaurus will help you come up with similar ingredients to complete your meal.

Practical Chemistry

Cool stuff.

Sabertron

Got kids? Like Gladiator movies? Maybe fancy a colored lightsaber from Star Wars? Well this Kickstarter project just might be for you. Sabertron: Foam sword play with wireless electronic scoring.

Useless College Courses

Why would one go into six figure debt and take courses like this? Rutgers University offers class on Beyonce.

Or this one. Backward college professor teaches students to sympathize with bin Laden.

Car WiFi

Nice idea in theory but if every car does not have one, it will be a problem. Potholes abound on the road to car-to-car communication. Once you get used to relying on the alert system to proceed through an intersection, you may stop looking both ways before proceeding and that'll be the one time a car without it runs the red light. I have blind spot detection on my current car and it works great except when it rains. I still look over my shoulder before making a lane change but I'm sure there are some people who rely on the gadget without verifying it is in fact clear.

In addition to the above, there are still concerns over hacking and who can get your information and use it against you.

Chinese Demands

Heh. US to China: "Happy New Year." China to US: "Give us our money back." I guess they haven't heard about what happened to the GM bondholders.

Airsoft Battles

OK, I think I can get into this airsoft gun stuff, if I could have one of these.

Pin-Ups

The visual references used by artist Gil Elvgren for his pin-up girl artwork.
