Overnight Open Thread (18 Oct 2013)
This week reminded of that awful movie Aliens VS Predators where the tagline for the movie was "no matter who wins, we lose". So you democrats enjoy your victory. If you want to call it that.
So what are we left with? A burgeoning debt, and no effort on the horizon to get it under control. Obama’s “victory” couldn’t be much more hollow, as his policies continue to drive us toward financial catastrophe.
What happens when cities fall apart?
Hmmmm. Interesting read. What happens when cities fall apart: The coming age of the urban guerrilla.
Crime is Warfare on Another Scale. There has been "a blurring of the distinction between crime and warfare" in urban environments, he pointed out. Armed gangs and paramilitary terrorist groups are blurring together. Look no further than cartel violence in northern Mexico and you can see that a sufficiently organized criminal is no different than a warlord.
We might say that a large enough crime spree is indistinguishable from an insurgency—a revolution against order in the city.
Sense of Scale
This ended up being harder than I thought it would be. Macro or micro? Test your sense of scale with images either from space or from a microscope.
Bacon and Cooking
I could be convinced to try the Bacon Beer Milkshake. But first I'd have to get to the Texas Motor Speedway.
The milkshake includes six ounces of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream, two ounces of bacon syrup, two ounces of candied bacon, and half a bottle of Rahr & Sons Ugly Pug Black Lager.
Chef Pena tops it off with whipped cream topping and yes, a handful of bacon bits, making it sixteen ounces of pure decadence and meat sweats.
Now, we haven't had any cooking videos in awhile, so here's one with Halloween in mind.
Ninja Tracks
I stumbled upon this the other day and it is pretty good. There is a group called Ninja Tracks that focuses on providing music for movie trailers. It is a pretty good sound. Trailermusicnews.com describes their sound as "fusing electronic and synthetic elements with punishing industrial rock and cinematic orchestration to create an explosive, high impact soundscape designed to accentuate any campaign".
Other good tracks are Destroyer Of Worlds, 5 By 5, Blackened Sky, Fallen Angels and Everything Burns. Heck, they're all pretty damn good. Now if they only would sell their albums.
Did You Know.....
That Mountain Dew was invented as Whiskey Mix?
SMOD
OK, I have some better news after last Friday's update about SMOD not showing up for another 100 years or so. Newly discovered asteroid could hit Earth in 2032. That's about the same time the healthcare.gov website might be fully operational.
