Gaming thread

Gaming below

Short week from The Dude as I've had a crappy weekend.

Got a new trailer for Killer is Dead and it's as crazy as you would expect

The second biggest problem in the Metal Gear series is no more as David Hayter will not be reprising the role of Snake. And of course he's all pissy about it. Now if only someone would have the balls to tell Kojima how awful of a writer he is.

It had been a few years since the last upheaval (in the long string of them, happening every couple of years) of LucasArts so they were due when Disney shut them down this past week. I would shed a tear but the great games have been stuck in the vault for almost 20 years as it is so no use in crying over spilled milk. I wish StarWars 1313 wasn't cancelled though as the vertical slice trailers looked pretty good.

Telltale drops the rights to King's Quest as their plates are full and though I would like a new King's Quest game, it was probably for the better as Telltale really is more fail than good.

More talk of the new Xbox needing an internet connection. And once again, I'm nonplussed about it as for some reason, as I get older, I find myself wanting hyper-connectivity (but I've always loved grand tech ideas so eh).

A new record for Kickstarter as inXile closed with just under $4.2 million on their Torment sequel. That's enough to get Chris Avellone on board.

A couple of releases this past week of note:

On the console/PC side you had Trion (Rift devs) release their new MMO that works in conjunction with the upcoming show on Sci-Fi titled Defiance. Supposed to be pretty good. From the previews, I don't think the actual tv show will last but you can never tell when it comes to shows on that channel.

The main releases this past week were on iOS:
First you have this year's mobile version of the seminal baseball management sim, iOOTP 2013. Sure, you may not get the full Sabermetric package of it's PC mother but frankly, I actually prefer this game on the mobile platform as it's a great time waster while sitting on the can which is where my Brewers will be at the end of my season (I don't believe you game in telling me that I'm in second place at the break while my whole frigging team sucks in stats except for decent season from Aoki). No retina nor widescreen support (for your iPhone 5 users) yet but then again, there isn't any graphics, it's all text so it doesn't personally bother me. Wish they would get away from the way the monetized seasons of yesteryear but eh. But for $5, you do get the slightly pared down version of the one of only two sport management sims around that is worth a damn (other being the Football Manager series).

The second release is Badland which is a simple one button game that strikes a balance of a endless runner with the classic Lemmings gameplay that has a lot to like except for the fact that it's currently too short. They will be updating it with new levels but the current 40 are too easy and by the time when the difficulty starts to pick up, it's over with. It very much hits that junkie type itch where you want moar but until they release them, you just sit there wanting more. AT $4, I dunno if I would buy it at this moment with it's lack of content but the game is a lot of fun so keep an eye on it for when they update it.

The third release is The Other Brothers finally releasing after a few years of hearing anything about it and frankly, it could have used a few more in the oven. First off, their version of the floating dpad is complete crap that makes it unplayable. I still tried to trudge on but what I got was uninspiring level design. I dunno, game left a bad taste in my mouth. They say that the first update will have controls that don't suck but they also ended up jacking the price up to two bucks. If you want to buy it in hopes of it possibly being good at one point, be my guest but I wish I didn't buy it. It's what I get with buying something without checking impressions first. Oh and don't tell them that the controls suck as they don't like that and think they made a good call with their design choice.
