New Star Trek Into Darkness Trailer
Be warned, this one pretty much gives you the whole plot, though they still avoid mentioning the villain's name. I don't see why they have to do that, particularly with a film like this. I mean, does anyone think they're going to have trouble getting folks to see it in theaters?
I guess this film, and the rebooted franchise, is growing on me. A little. It's still not my Star Trek.
So... [ace]: @verumserum told me the villain was, for all practical purposes, Khan Noonian Singh.
Based on this trailer, I think he's right. The villain, Cumberbatch, seems to be playing a Starfleet agent and he boasts he's "better at everything" than Kirk. I imagine this agent is some kind of engineered human, maybe?
So while it's not Khan, he will be a genetically improved human, engineered for hardiness, intuitive improvisation, and a casual comfort with serious violence, and now he's come back to get vengeance over some or other atrocity he blames Star Fleet for. (Possibly an atrocity he himself committed, but under orders from Star Fleet.)
And now Kirk in turn wants vengeance on Khan.
It does seem like a reskinned take on Khan. Different name, different backstory, but same narrative and emotional logic of the Khan film.
