Gun Thread (3-10-2013)

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Above-the-post Update: NRA Life Memberships are $300 until April 16th. (h/t 'Laurie David's Cervix' in the comments)

Gabrielle Giffords' Husband Doesn't Want You To Have An AR-15

But he apparently bought one for himself completely by accident on the way out of a gun store. Or something. Maybe they were just on his mind since he's been talking about how evil they are.

Mark E. Kelly, gun-control proponent and husband to former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, recently purchased an AR-15 (an "assault weapon," he called it)—which he now says he intended as an illustration of the need for more stringent gun laws.

The related Facebook post of his, made after he knew he'd been caught, is hilarious.

Looks like the judiciary committee will vote on background checks next week. I just had a background check a few days ago when I went to my local gun store to buy a 45. As I was leaving, I noticed a used AR-15. Bought that too. Even to buy an assault weapon, the background check only takes a matter of minutes. I don't have possession yet but I'll be turning it over to the Tucson PD when I do. Scary to think of people buying guns like these without a background check at a gun show or the Internet. We really need to close the gun show and private seller loop hole.

Wow. I guess when they set up the "instant background check" system, they really meant "instant". I know that's unexpected for the government, but it actually does perform as advertised most of the time.

Is Kelly saying there's something in his background a longer check would uncover? Is he saying that a background check for an "assault weapon" should be different than one for a handgun? I mean, he only has one background and I'm really struggling to understand the problem with a system that should indicate he was clear to buy the guns returning the correct answer too quickly.

Oh, wait ... he's just an asshat throwing out a weaselly excuse after he got caught doing something he now finds embarrassing. Got it.

Do NOT Stray From The Plantation

Your average black guy can't be a 2nd Amendment supporter, says a rich, black, liberal guy.

Colion Noir, a young African American who is conservative and pro-gun, is the National Rifle Association's newest spokesman, but apparently this has proven too much for rap and entertainment mogul Russell Simmons.

I'm sorry. Mr. Simmons, that the uppity Mr. Noir apparently doesn't find life on the left's plantation all that fulfilling.

Gun Of The Week

Marksmanship Award

As a reminder, Cam is a longtime lurker Moron. There's no shortage of 2nd Amendment topics to be discussed these days, and Cam does a great job of it. If you can, I'd encourage you to listen to Cam's show daily on Sirius/XM or watch it on TV (5pm on the Sportsman Channel).

Gun Of The Week - Answer

What a beautiful piece. That's the Remington Model 81 (or Model 8). They made them in .35 Remington, .300 Savage and some other now-obsolete rimless cartridge chamberings. Three guesses on who designed this one, and the first two don't count.

Who Needs Guns When You Have A Loving Government?

Ahh, liberal historians. Forever ignoring the outcomes to make ... a ... point? I guess?

In his State of the Union speech in January 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt declared America's commitment to Four Freedoms in the struggle against Nazi totalitarianism. Among them was the freedom from fear. If Roosevelt were alive today, I believe that he'd ask the nation to rededicate itself to that freedom. Surely, Roosevelt would recognize the fear of Second Amendment advocates who worry about a government turned against them. Such a tyranny was the force in moving FDR to make that speech.

Because the founding fathers totally didn't fear big government over all else.

Be sure to read that whole thing. It's a nice ode to the benevolence of the state that just wants everything good and right for you, citizen 123456.

Samuel Adams summed up my thoughts on Dallek and his ilk long ago.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom — go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.

We simply can't inhabit a common country with these people anymore.
