Overnight Open Thread 7-25-2012

Hi there. Yes, you. Hi. Oh, you're looking to kill time on the internet this fine evening? I can help you with that. Come right in. I've tucked a bunch of videos from my favorite musical YouTubers under the fold. Maybe you'll find one you like. If not, you could always tell me about it in the comments.

The absolute gold standard in musician YouTubers is Alex Goot. Here he is, along with Tiffany Alvord and Luke Conard, covering Fun.'s recent hit "We Are Young."

Goot's done quite a few music videos over the past few years, including some good originals. I particularly like his cover of Adele's "Someone Like You" (also with Conard and Chad Sugg) and his new cover of Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Good Time."

If pop isn't to your taste, how about this killer rendition of "House of the Rising Son" by Jono with Tyler Ward:

Ward has managed to turn his epic YouTube addiction into a steady career helping young artists online. His collaboration with the brothers of Boyce Avenue will give you chills. Or, if country is more your speed, his version of "Dirt Road Anthem" is better than the original.

Mashups and medleys are big on YouTube. Here's Victoria Justice and Max Schneider's medley of Bruno Mars songs, directed by another career YouTuber, Kurt Schneider:

Woman's got moves. Victoria and Max just did another medley of Maroon 5 songs. The video that first got me watching all these people was an Adele medley by Goot, Justin Robinette and Michael Henry. Also worth a shot: this Sam Tsui mashup of "Love The Way You Lie", "Dynamite", and "Teenage Dream."

Long-distance collaborations are also pretty common. Like, for example, this version of "For Good" from Wicked by Sam Tsui and a eunuch in a toupee.

Another long-distance collaboration that came together was Alex G's acoustic cover of Nicki Minaj's "Starships."

Sometimes you can practically see the learning curve for these types of independent videos. Here's an early effort from Justin Robinette and Michael Henry, a heart-rending cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah."

A similar video before Goot's videos got so professional-looking is his version of Katy Perry's "California Gurls."

Last one (in order not to make page loading times completely unendurable), try this cover of "Pay Phone" from the delightful Megan Nicole and Dave Days:

Finally, here are worthy originals from some of these people:

Alex Goot - "Breathless"
Chester See - "God Damn You're Beautiful"
Luke Conard and Landon Austin - "Superhero"

Folks dubious about supporting big label music might keep an eye on these musical YouTubers. I hope you found some music you liked and otherwise killed some time. Sleep tight!
