Initial Unemployment Claims Way, Way Down
I don't present the Initial Unemployment Claims data unless either it's the day before the Unemployment Rate comes out, or it's interesting. Today's release satisfied both those criteria: the Department of Labor reported a drop to 368,000 - the lowest level we've seen since April 2008.
The drop continues the trend we've seen since last August. If that trend continues, we'll be back to pre-recession levels of claims in about 20 weeks. That would be great - the first step to getting the unemployment rate down is to stop flooding the economy with the newly unemployed faster than it can take them up.
