The state of ClimateGate today, March 3 2010. [krakatoa]

(A series of daily-ish roundups of the day's Climate news and commentary.)

This is by no means a comprehensive recap. The stories come from a variety of sources, and I highly recommend

exploring the linked sites for more breaking news.

(after the break...)

Dog bites Mann story? Cultists in murder-suicide pact. Michael Mann, Phil Jones & Al Gore were not asked for a comment for some strange reason.

WUWT:

Anthony Watts gets the Guardian to stop using "denier" in news articles when referring to skeptics.

I suppose the warmists will say that a lack of tornadoes in February, for the first time in the history of the National Weather Sevice records, constitutes "extreme weather" and is therefore in keeping with the theory that we are all going to bake to death.

2001-2010 was the snowiest decade on record, and all I got was a case of the Copenhagen Clap.

Climate science is a really new science, and according to Phil Jones'es testimony, appears to be about the only one that owes its success to a decided lack of a peer-review that examines data or methodology.

In the UK, Climategate hearings are under way, and as Ace pointed out, Jones is having an increasingly rough time of it.

First the MPs started going wonky on him. Now the hard sciences are piling on.

The Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry have issued statements excoriating the methods of CRU.

Stephen McIntyre added his own memorandum.

The Royal Statistical Society has piled on.

They all beat one horse so bad it got back up and kicked Parliament in their fancy coiffed berries:

5. The position of the RSS regarding public dissemination of scientific data is that where the results of scientific analyses have been published or are otherwise in the public domain, the raw data, and associated meta-data, used for these analyses should, within reason, also be made available.

In Jones defense, the Ministry of Just Makin' Shit Up has issued a statement in support of his "standard practices".

Phil Jones has shown the same tireless perseverance and selflessness in pursuing a solution to AGW as he did when he carried Sir Edmund Hillary and 3 Sherpas on his back up the slopes of Everest. And he's got a truly grand John Thomas. We trust him implicitly.

Meanwhile in the U.S., media attention is focused like a laser on the devastating effects the free market system is having on chicken wing prices and pornography. Which is my passive-aggressive way of telling our MSM to keep schtuppin' that chicken.

Obviously they have no time or resources to spare to cover Senator Inhofe's campaign against ignorance.

Inhofe's panel lists one or two things the MSM here in the U.S. managed to miss:

As it turns out, the IPCC mistakenly claimed that global warming would:

* Melt Himalayan glaciers by 2035;
* Endanger 40 percent of Amazon rainforests;
* Melt mountain ice in the Alps, Andes, and Africa;
* Deplete water resources for 4.5 billion people by 2085, neglecting to mention that global warming could also increase water resources for as many as 6 billion people;
* Lead to rapidly increasing costs due to extreme weather-related events; and
* Slash crop production by 50 percent in North Africa by 2020.

In addition, the IPCC:

* Incorrectly stated that 55 percent of the Netherlands lies below sea level;
* Included a diagram used to demonstrate the potential for generating electricity from wave power that has been found to contain numerous errors;
* Used a biased report by the activist group Defenders of Wildlife to state that salmon in US streams have been affected by rising temperatures; and
* Downplayed the increase in sea ice in the Antarctic to dramatize the observed decline in sea ice in the Arctic.

Climate Scientist Roy Spencer has been analyzing the raw data from NOAA, and finds many curiosities and inconsistencies.

Money 'graph:

It is increasingly apparent that we do not even know how much the world has warmed in recent decades, let alone the reason(s) why. It seems to me we are back to square one.

Ian Murray & Roger Abbott at The American Spectator report on the latest problems with NASA/GISS AGW claims, gleaned from the emails retrieved using an FOI request.

The emails reveal that GISS, like CRU, has done a poor job of preserving and managing its data. Although there is no evidence that GISS has destroyed its data, as CRU did in the late 1980s, Dr. Reto Ruedy of GISS admits in an email that "[The United States Historical Climate Network] data are not routinely kept up-to-date." In another email, he reveals that NASA had inflated its temperature data since 2000 on a questionable basis. "[NASA's] assumption that the adjustments made the older data consistent with future data… may not have been correct,"

The emails also reveal that privately, NASA scientists could only find half of the supposed warming that their counterparts in CRU were able to divine.

In fact, further corrections revealed by the emails indicate that U.S. temperatures on average had only increased by 0.5 degree Celsius since 1934, rather than 1 degree, as originally claimed.

Arthur K's headline re. the Great Oz Foil Caper bears further exposure, as a lesson of just how quickly plans to save the Earth go awry.
