Watching this in an hour, my favorite show on TV. The show seems like it was written, while drunk, in an hour. It's slapdash, the mysteries are only occasionally clever, half the show is just the main character behaving like an utter jackass, but for some reason it works.
It helps that every other episode is basically a parody of a movie like Friday the 13th or The Exorcist (good one) or, like, every single John Hughes high school movie (really good one).
CBS completely ripped off the show's premise -- a fake psychic using his mundane but elevated powers of observation to solve crimes -- for its "own" show, The Mentalist. The only difference is that the CBS show features a fake psychic who acknowledges he's a fake, whereas Psych features a fake psychic who, being a congenital liar who lies for no reason except it amuses him, pretends he really is psychic.
