Saturday Honors
This is a good weekend. It's a time to gather with those we care about, put the work woes behind, and enjoy one another. I do love this weekend so.
This story caught my attention, perhaps it caught yours.
Our last veteran of the first World War.
I listen to his words. They just humble me.
I hope we remember what they gave us. I hope it keeps us focused upon what those who serve now give us.
I will wager a paycheck that most of you have someone in your world, who does this. Day in, day out. About to deploy, or back from one.
What they do, or did, is so much. They loved you and our country with their very bodies, and their souls (and boxers). It's that.
God keep them.
In my youth, we gathered as a family. Window units on, in Alabama, damn it gets hot, giving us some comfort from the heat and humidity. I remember sleepin in front of one, as a boy.
But the thing that stands out most, was the church servce. And the picnic,
and the grave tending.
Flags everywhere. I did not know, as a boy of nine in the sun, running around with my shirt off and laughing while my Aunt Opel had tears in her eyes. Just couldn't get it.
I know now.
We owe a debt we cannot repay. We can only honor and respect those who gave what they had. For some it was all.
Tell those, close to you. Tell them the words you think are silly, or don't mean much, or make you feel inadequate to the task. Do it anyway!. They are all around you. Make it your mission this weekend to let them know how you feel, what you know.
Do that.
You will be so glad you did.
