Overnight Open Thread: “Post-P-I Depression” (genghis)
Damn. What to write about now that the P-I is gone? Well, not completely since they’re now a blog and you can go visit them here.
Maybe some little nugget that got pushed to the side during all the recent fun? Why not.
A little while back the American Film Institute did one of those lists that everyone loves to hate and poke holes into. This one is The 100 Greatest Movie Quotes of all Time. They have lots of other lists you can disagree with as well. The list of quotes is available here as a PDF document.
As always with lists of these types, there’s plenty of good ones and plenty of WTF? quotes. As you might suspect, films like “Casablanca,” “Gone with the Wind” and “The Wizard of Oz” dominate. Below the fold I’ve placed the most egregious omissions from the list, at least in my opinion. Feel free to add your own in, along with anything else troubling your already troubled minds.
Simply inexcusable to leave out Ripley’s line. How is that not the greatest moment in cinematic history? The clip is from Hulu and you may have to do a short registration thingy to watch it due to the fact it contains filthy filthy language. There was a clip at YouTube but pretty poor quality. The rest of the clips below are from YouTube.
Now of course this clip isn’t of a single excellent quote, but rather a whole series of them. It’s really a tough choice to pick out which one is the best. (NSFW language of course…u haz bin wornd)
They did get in a “Rocky” line, but it was just “Yo Adrian.” For me, the best line in the franchise is “Ain’t so bad!” during the last fight scene with Clubber Lang. Lots of other choice quotes in the first 4 movies that were better than “Yo Adrian,” but I guess the idea is what quotes are “memorable.”
And no “Predator” either. This clip doesn’t include the best line, from Jesse Ventura: “I ain’t got time to bleed.” He gets wasted in the first few seconds. But it does have some hhhaaawt minigun on predator action.
And a tragic lack of lines from “The Warriors.” What list of the awesomest quotes in movie history is complete without “I’m gonna’ shove that bat up your ass and turn you into a popsicle” I ask you?
Plenty more from movies like “Die Hard,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Repo Man,” “Dazed and Confused”, “Reservoir Dogs,” “Debbie Does Dallas” and so forth, but I don’t want to crash the blog putting up more videos. Add your own to the mix.
