Overnight Open Thread: The Awesomeness that is Pi (genghis)
(This is from yesterday, but the overnight thread was already packed to the gills.)
No, not the P-I, but rather the mathematical constant. Politico has an article about the House of Representatives honoring Pi.
”With the world swirling about it, the House took a moment Thursday to honor pi, the Greek letter symbolizing that great constant in mathematics representing the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.”
Lots of well-placed snark from Politico in the short article. They saved the best for last though:
”But there’s always one: “We were never good at math in my family,” said Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.). “I thought I was voting for p-i-e.””
Sure, you may laugh, but in all honesty, wouldn’t you prefer Congress spending their time on things like this rather than helping to dismantle the entire capitalist system?
So how did you spend Pi day? Hopefully gathered around something circular with your friends and family. More on Pi can be found here. Now that it’s an official federal holiday, I can imagine that other math interest groups will start agitating for their own recognition and holiday. For example, I was trolling around on a Pythagorean Theorem advocacy forum this evening, and boy are they pissed off. They’re talking about a march on Washington and promising “trouble in the streets” if they don’t get the recognition they feel they’re owed. They claim that there’s been a long history of Circular oppression against Triangular –Americans and that now is the time to end the discrimination once and for all.
An artist’s depiction of Pi is below the fold. (thanks to Jubal Anderson Early for yet another fine tip)
Ha suckers! You thought I was gonna’ post a pic of pie here didn’t you? We are morons, but I don’t think we’ve quite sunk to Murtha’s level of ignorance yet. So instead, here’s a link to all or most of the Ren and Stimpy episodes at “Joost.” Apparently the site’s been around for a while but I just stumbled across it yesterday while looking for something else. It’s a lot like Hulu in that they provide free teevee series episodes and whatnot…you just have to watch the occasional commercial. Some of the Ren & Stimpy episodes seem to be mislabeled though. YMMV.
