Overnight Open Thread. Now ribbed for her pleasure. (genghis)
"Jubal Anderson Early" provides a tip from RedState regarding an interview that Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) took part in with the always even-keeled and balanced Amy Goodman of Pacifica Radio’s “Democracy Now!” (You can tell it’s an important show because it has an exclamation point after the title.)
Rep. Kaptur has some interesting ideas regarding the law:
“Democratic Congressmember Marcy Kaptur is encouraging homeowners facing foreclosures to stay in their homes. Kaptur says residents should exercise squatters” rights to refuse being forced out because of loans that she says could well have been illegal.”
But the Wayne County Sheriff will be enforcing the order to vacate foreclosed residences, right? Right? Well, not so much:
” In Michigan, Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans announced Monday he won’t enforce sales of foreclosed homes.”
It’s disturbing that a congresscritter is encouraging people to break the law, but I can actually sympathize, and maybe it is better that they “squat” in their foreclosed houses. After all, we keep reading stories about homes in Detroit being put up for sale at $5.00 and stuff. Probably best for the lenders to write those loans off where possible. 1) They’ll never recoup their losses in that market, nowhere near original loan amounts, 2) They rid themselves of liability for both insurance (Timmy broke his leg in your unsecured abandoned house, never mind that he was trying to set it on fire!) and taxes (bet those haven’t gone down along with plunging property value) and 3) If they stay, the residents might even marginally keep the places up, if they ever did in the first place, but won’t put as much added pressure on charities and agencies which cater to the unhomed.
The residents will of course illegally tap into public utilities such as water and power. Some will hurt or kill themselves, but inner-city Detroit has replaced the South Bronx from the late ‘70’s/early ‘80’s as the perfect example of what happens when a neighborhood in America transforms into a little piece of the Third World. It's Dystopia Rock City, baby!
Read RedState’s take on it then click beyond for the actual interview.
Then come back, because the perfect answer is hiding just below the fold.
