Update: "DPR Hussein VIII" informs us that "Speed and Angels" is available at Hulu.com for free (which it is, tho' you have to watch a short commercial now and then. You'll live...just suck it up bubba.)
Original Post:
(Depending on what time you read it.) As always, there is nothing "off topic."
A few weeks back I did a post about the impending decommissioning of the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk (CV-63), the last conventionally-powered carrier in the fleet. As is common knowledge, the current carriers we have switched over to Rainbow-fueled drives on January 20th. Dolphins also assist in pushing them through the seas, having been summoned to duty by Him. They do so gladly, though top speeds now are only about 0.5 knots. (Previously the screws were driven by dilithium crystals.) The Dept. of the Navy is also running low on Purina Dolphin Chow, so do your part and mail them a cup or two.
Today there was a ceremony at Naval Station Bremerton honoring the ship and her crew, both former and current. Article about it here.
”ABOARD THE USS KITTY HAWK — If this country ever needed a crew of loyal sailors, ready and more than willing — if not all quite as able — to take up their posts again, the former crew members of the USS Kitty Hawk would answer the call.”
“More than 2,000 former and current crew members, their families and dignitaries gathered to bid the aircraft carrier goodbye.”
“The Navy's last fossil-fueled aircraft carrier, the Kitty Hawk is being retired, moved from Pier 6 at the Bremerton Naval Station to the shipyard next door, where it will ultimately be decommissioned.”
One of the commenters at the article posted a link to a documentary from last year called
Speed and Angels. Description:
”Inspired by the passion of two young Navy officers, director Peyton Wilson captures Jay and Meagan as they pursue their childhood dream of becoming naval aviators flying the F-14 Tomcat. Shot in epic Hi Definition, the aerial footage and stunning cockpit photography provide a dramatic backdrop for the more universal story of what it’s like to fight for your dreams. From dogfights in the Nevada desert, to night landings on aircraft carriers in the Atlantic what begins as a story of realizing a childhood dream turns into a story of fighting for one's life.”
Currently it’s being shown at film festivals (wtf?), but is also available for purchase on the site. It might just be the antidote to that gawdawful piece of shit series “Carrier” that PBS ran last year.
Thanks Old Girl…rest in peace (but don’t rust in peace…ya’ never know…)
