THE VIGIL OF DESTRUCTION [TomM.]
Here's the nut graf of John McCain's statement today.
"At this moment, the plan that has been put forth by the Administration does not enjoy the confidence of the American people as it will not protect the taxpayers and will sacrifice Main Street in favor of Wall Street. "
John McCain is doing something important: he is claiming to speak for the American people.
He might as well; nobody else is claiming to do so.
However, there's something deeper at work here.
The plan doesn't enjoy the confidence of the American people because the American people see no sudden crisis.
They think the problem is another Iraq war: another problem that, in their minds, could have been put off indefinitely, with no serious consequence, if only the Bush Administration didn't railroad them into it.
See, they don't think market is in any sort of crisis. It's just in a sort of... multiyear statis, that will go away as soon as the long-awaited recession is done with and the new administration comes along.
The problem is contained. It's in its box. It's not connected to my life yet. Don't put my dollars on the line. What's the rush?
That's the thought pattern John McCain has to acknowledge, and break through, by the end of next week. Without a major stock market drop, good luck with it.
