A suggestion to the GOP (chad)
No it's not going to be "Be more conservative" although I am sure that is the suggestion many people would like to make. Instead I am going to abuse Ace's open blog hospitality by suggesting that maybe it would be a good idea to engage in and win the battle of ideas.
It's all very well and good to say that Republicans are the party of small government and limited regulation, but how about we tell people why? Lay out the philosophical underpinnings behind the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and how those foundations carry forward into the current GOP platform. Give it a flashy name like "Foundations of Freedom" make a few 60 second commercials and throw them on during prime time a few times. Make a second version where local Senate and Congressional candidates can explain how their platform ties in and let them run them in their district.
Define what the GOP party brand means and make the Dems do the same.
These would be my suggestions for an initial set of ads:
John Locke's Two Treatises on Government
Montesquieu's On the Spirit of Laws
David Hume's A Treatise on Human Nature
Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments and Wealth of Nations
Declaration of Independence
The Constitution
The Bill of Rights
Or maybe I am completely wrong.
While I am here I have one other suggestion for the GOP how about getting some candidates out there challenging for the House and Senate. It would be nice to take back a couple seats this year.
