Everyone Knew About SWIFT Program... Except Reporter Eric Lichtblau
The reporter who exposed the program, and now claims everyone knew about it, wrote a couple of years ago about the US' utter lack of capabilities in financial-monitoring.
Powerline makes a lot of good points, apart from the "liar, liar" one.
For one thing: If the Times is now claiming "everyone knew," shouldn't they run a correction correcting the original article's multiple references to the program being a "closely-held secret"?
For another: Bush was hit with Lichtblau's old article, which suggested incompetency on his part in this area. And yet the Bush people didn't leak the secrets of the program for their political advantage.
Gee, maybe they thought that national security concerns trumped petty political advantage, eh?
Too bad the Al Qaeda Intelligence Service doesn't feel the same way.
