"Whitewashing" Crimes By Our Troops
Yep, we're covering it up:
"There are known terrorists incarcerated in military facilities around the world who enjoy more freedom and less restriction than he is experiencing," [an attorney representing the Navy corpsman implicated in an incident at Hamdaniya stated].
"During the one brief period per day he is allowed to utilize the recreational yard, my client remains shackled at the hands, waist, and ankles. Anytime he walks within the recreational yard he is escorted by at least one military prison guard who grasps onto his waist shackles at all times. The balance of his time is spent in solitary confinement," [the attorney] said.
I expect that Andrew Sullivan will now be in full-throated cry that we're "torturing" and "humiliating" this man. He wouldn't support this sort of "horrific" treatment of Al Qaeda killers, would he?
Correction! The Navy corpsman is implicated in an incident at Hamdaniya, where he and seven Marines are accused of grabbing an Iraqi from his home, shooting him, and placing a weapon on him. It's not Haditha. I guess I wasn't following this very closely, because I thought the seven-Marines-and-one-Navy-corpsman were implicated in Haditha.
Nope. Hamdaniya. Which seems a far less serious case. And yet-- shackling and solitary confinement.
