THE MORNING RANT: Conservative, Inc. and The Conservative Case for Removing Statues of Our Founding Fathers
The statue of Thomas Jefferson was just removed from New York’s City Hall. This was inevitable, with America’s left now comfortable in its spitting hatred of the United States’ heritage.
“Thomas Jefferson statue removed from City Hall after 187 years” [NY Post – 11/23/2021]
Keri Butler, executive director of the Public Design Commission that voted to banish the statue, at first tried to block the press from witnessing its removal. Butler relented after members of the mayor’s office and City Council intervened.
The commission also attempted to vote on the statue’s removal without a public hearing on the controversial move until The Post revealed the plan.
This was also enabled by the polite conservatives of Conservative, Inc. who cheered on the initial rounds of statue removal a couple years ago.
Rich Lowry of National Review was a pom-pom waving fanboy of the left’s statue removal agenda in 2020.
Secession was a traitorous act that threatened to destroy the American nation, and the South’s leaders don’t deserve to be given a place of honor.
Lowry was also trying to get a dig in at Trump.
For his part, President Donald Trump has been a steadfast defender of the statues and other forms of recognition of the Confederacy. He has come out in favor of preserving the names of military bases named after Confederate generals and pointedly said that we should build on our heritage rather than tear it down.
Conservatives tend to think the same way. They reflexively oppose politically correct campaigns to destroy anything giving offense. They fear where the slippery slope of woke iconoclasm will lead — first it’s Jefferson Davis, ultimately George Washington.
We conservatives feared the slippery slope because we knew it was inevitable. To be fair, I suspect that Mr. Lowry also knew it was inevitable that statues of Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln would be torn down soon thereafter. His role in the faux-conservative movement is to ease conservatives into polite surrender to the left’s agenda.
There is nothing before 2008 (Obama’s election) that the left doesn’t despise about this country. It’s not stopping with monuments of the founding fathers either. The Flag, the National Anthem, patriotism, and the Constitution (including the Bill of Rights) will all be targeted by the left, and there will be plenty of surrender-cons like Rich Lowry to explain the conservative case for each incremental erosion of our heritage, our liberty, and our national identity.
