Consumer Reports says Mazda is the most reliable car brand now. I find this hard to believe?

Posted by:vmom sic semper stabbicusat April 06, 2021 09:52 PM (GBZnB)

I do too, a little. On the Japanese big three spectrum, Honda was more expensive but better appointed, Toyota was slightly expensive but bulletproof, and Mazda wasn't quite as reliable as the other two but way more fun.
But that impression is maybe 20 years old, so ymmv.

I had a 2012 mazda 3 that had 175k on it when i had to total it due to water damage, about 5 years ago. it was a stick, great car, never gave me a single problem. hell the brakes lasted 125k on it.

i would have bought another one when my car died, but they changed the cockpit layout, and the stereo / nav / tablet thing literally looked like someone glued a tablet on top of the dash as a after thought. it was just TOO ugly and i hated it. i wanted another 3.

i would go for a Ford Explorer. It depends on the year I suppose, in fact I know that. But people bash them and call them "Exploders"., my experience has been the exact opposite. I drive a Sequoia now and everyone told me it was ten times better. But the gas mileage is horrible, the electronics that run anti lock breaks etc are defect, and I get more recall notices from Toyota than I got letters from lovers while in service.

They say the Toyota engine will last 400k, so there is that. It is also super powerful, if you put the pedal down, that thing will move. With both it might be hit and miss depending on the year. i am no car guy, and we do have many car guys here.

Up to 2004, the Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0 (6) cylinder in-line was one of the most reliable and capable SUV's out there.  I still have one (1999, 175,000 miles) and highly recommend it.  You might not want something that old (spare parts issues), but I have not experienced any problems in that regard so far.

Posted by: nurse ratched at April 06, 2021 10:43 PM (U2p+3)

that is what happened to my Explorer.  I didn't want to give that one up. that year was famous for lasting forever. I went to a junk yard to replace the driver's seat but they didn't have one. The guy that ran the lot drove the exact model but he was not going to give up the vehicle for me.

i will say this about the Sequioa.  That thing will move when you want it too. The engine is pretty famous. But I had some bad luck with mine. They sold it to me used with a fault known in the brand. The antilock breaks are failing. They don't bother me but it is not something you want to deal with after a "thorough inspection" prior to purchase. It also gets crap mileage, like 10 to 12 miles crap.  But again, lot  of power and other than all the recalls, it has been reliable. At this point I am ignoring them. I was them to recall the anti lock breaks.

Blanco if you are happy with your purchase the latest generation of Ryzen desktop APUs is sadly OEM only.  The Ryzen 7 4750G is an amazing processor with very good on board graphics so unless you are doing a lot of video post processing it can do damn near anything you need.

The next generation of APU will likely have RDNA2 graphics cores.

212 Quote of the Day II:

A man can have sex with animals such as sheep, cows, camels and so on. However, he should kill the animal after he has his orgasm. He should not sell the meat to the people in his own village, but selling the meat to a neighbouring village is reasonable.

If one commits the act of sodomy with a cow, a ewe, or a camel, their urine and their excrement become impure and even their milkmay no longer be consumed. The animal must then be killed as quickly as possible and burned.

213 gmost of the recalls are related to air bags and stuff, not the engine. They need to recall bad electronics. We all know the Toyota engine is top notch. Oh yeah, they also did a recall on the frame for major rusting. They said mine was ok but they sprayed it with some super special protection. I guess my point is Toyota is not the be all and end all. But I realize most think very differently than I. I guess in the end, it comes down to your personal experiences.

The only problem I had with that car was that, after several years, the dashboard would squeak. I had to grip the vinyl top against the metal underneath to reduce the sound.

279 Not that anybody asked, but I drive a Kia. Can't recall the model, but it's from 2017 and is a standard transmission. I bought it used in '18. It came with Bluetooth and Sirius hookups, neither of which I use.

My previous car was also a Kia, a used Spectra 5. Put 200,000 miles -- and a couple of costly repairs -- on it until a cylinder cracked. It served me well.

I am a Kia fan.

280 Things are not going well for the prosecution in the Chauvin case (George Floyd wrongful death).
Much of the public expected an automatic conviction based on a widely seen video--- people saying no need for a trial, it's obvious guilt, etc. There's all this other stuff coming out in the trial, that they didn't see. Maybe the prosecution got caught up in it, and thought it was a slam dunk; and was less diligent as a result.
End of May or so, expect riots.

315    See the "forgotten TV network", DuMont Television Network. Jackie Gleason's "Cavalcade of Stars" aired on DuMont, and that's where the Honeymooners started as skits.
It was DuMont who invented the "Electronicam", an alternative to  the kinescope. Jackie Gleason continued to use the Electronicam for the Honeymooner episodes, and that's one of the reasons the Honeymooners episodes are such relatively high quality.     The Electronicam used a beam splitter to split the incoming light into two beams, one to a TV camera and the other to a film camera. The disadvantage was the camera system was very bulky and cumbersome.

318   Forgot to add, DuMont had a library of 20,000 TV episodes it had broadcast over its lifetime. Just about that entire library was destroyed, intentionally, by the people who eventually owned it. The story is that it was taking up too much room, so they just dumped it all in the East River.
"Captain Video" was a kid's space show DuMont ran, which famously featured in a Honeymooner's episode (Norton is a big Captain Video fan). Just about all of those shows are gone now.

I remember the Porsche 924 that they used as the platform for the later 944. The 924 was a Volkswagen with Porsche badges and a Porsche sticker price.

360 One thing I really like about Porsche is that they resist the drive to redesign cars constantly.  A 911 doesn't look exactly like it used to, but its enough so that you can immediately identify one no matter what year.  Its bigger now and slightly different, but still a 911.

The current series of Mustangs are pretty doggone good muscle cars, and will run circles around their early namesakes. Ford had one of the best efforts at making a modern retro muscle car.

Ugliest Mustangs had to be the early Mustang II's, which were just bloated Pintos.

The frustrating thing with that car was that it was close to being a good design then someone kept adding crap to it, like a beautiful classic someone stuck a Continental Kit on the back.  And one of those really big ones with the 3' bumper.

Significant couple of days, now.  Yesterday, I landed in San Diego, put a hundred n' sumpthin' miles on, visiting olde haunts and the like.

Today, drove up to Whittier, and had a bit of a visit at the grave of my Mother.  Like I said, significant.

Of related significance, without her, I would not have been in any position yesterday, to have observed the celestial odometer dialing in "63" in my turns around the sun.

It was a GOOD day today.  Just a bit of a weighty one, but GOOD, all the same.

402 I never had an undependable car, no matter how used.  First car was an 11 year old '61 T-Bird, 390 CID 4 BBL.  Grandma's eyes were failing quickly, and I was the only grandkid that was worthy and close to driving age.  It was a sweet car, leather buckets and interior.  Only 29,000 miles.  It drank premium gas like an alcoholic at a kegger, maybe 10mpg if I kept the leadfoot off, but it was also faster than hell after it got off the line.  Once it got over about 30, it would pass anything on the road and could still have power over 100mph and climbing.  I think I did that twice.   Sold it when I went off to community college and had to drive about 70 miles a day between home, school and work.  I sold it after the first quarter of community college, because I wasn't independently wealthy to pay for the gas, and Dad certainly wasn't going to help.   But he did help me find a 4 year old Mercury Montego, like a Ford Torino, with a straight 6.  About 26 mph on the freeway.  I could afford that.

Thanks.  It was a good visit, indeed.  Not a "happy" visit.  But GOOD.  She passed when I was 19, and it fell on me to manage and liquidate the estate, while home on emergency leave from the USAF.

Another good thing about this trip out West, with Herself New Dawn.  She's seen every story I've told her over the years, confirmed.  Every place I've described, every event recounted, substantiated.  Even in meeting up with a childhood friend who now lives in his folks' former house, in my former neighborhood.  Once he started with the tales of our youth, it sounded just like ME telling the stories.  And, oh.. dear LORD, there are stories.

It's been an interesting life so far, albeit not a particularly easy one.  But it sure hasn't been boring.

Khloe Kardashian's pic, without any touchup, was somehow released and the Kardashian family went nuts trying to recall it. Khloe doesn't even look like the pics of her that the Family normally releases.  That link from publius at 408 shows her in all of her actual, natural glory, wearing a string swimsuit.   To be fair, she isn't ugly, but a normal-ish body of a bigger girl instead of what the Family has foisted upon the public, shows how far they will go to control the message. But the Kardashians are worth more than a Billion dollars today.  Because Kim started it out making homemade porn and mama Kris seized the opportunity to make them a whole lot richer than the late dad could make them. And having Jenner's dad go all nutso probably helped the bank account, too.

434     Back when we were farming, you could generally get corn in around the first of April (field corn). We could generally plant even in late March. It's a function of soil temperature, which varies from plant to plant.  Corn needs at least 50F to plant. It's fairly cold tolerant, and can be planted fairly early.  55F is considered a good starting point
I've got some hybrid yellow sweet corn seeds, pretty expensive, and I'm gonna see how they do.
Roughly, soil temperature around here, average is around 60F.

498 The jurors in the Chauvin trial have to be sweating bullets they'll be doxxed. There are probably a couple that fear for their neighborhoods. I can't see a fair outcome, and I think the usual provocateurs will fire things up even if a guilty verdict comes in.  They will demand Chauvin be broken on the wheel.
