The Marvels bombs, on track for the lowest opening ever (even excluding the effects of inflation -- theater prices have gone up 40% since The Incredible Hulk debuted in 2008)
Though I didn't see it, this review from Alachia Queen seems right to me. She says it's not just that this movie is written only for women. She says the movie is written for female children. Not teenage girls, but girl children. Yet the movie is being advertised as if it's intended for adults (or at least teens). She says no, it's a Disney TV channel kidshow sitcom episode, She says, "This is the absolute, full-on Disneyfication of the Marvel Universe. We have gone full Mickey Mouse club." The plot includes a trip to the planet where people only sing (!) so Bree Larson has to sing (badly), a planet where Captain Marvel is a princess, married, for Space Politics purposes, to the prince. It's a literal Disney Princess movie.
She also says it's a poor movie, even when you adjust your expectations to say "This is for little kids."
Despite all that, Chris Gore says all of the female characters (except, I guess, the youngest one) are "gay-coded" and are obviously written to be lesbians, except that Disney doesn't have the guts to say that they're lesbians.
