Why Zimmerman's Motion for an Acquittal Should Have Been Granted
At the close of the prosecution's case, the defense is permitted to ask that the judge rule that no reasonable jury could find against the defendant and short-circuit the jury by entering a "not guilty" finding... of course the judge denied this, but he shouldn't have: The prosecution failed to make its case, as a matter of law
